Tips for Straight Allies
Don’t out LGBT friends to other people without their permission.
Know your local resources.
Don’t let your negative personal beliefs come before your friendship.
Don’t say any of the following things:
“We always knew.”
“But what about the straight crushes and relationships you had in the past?”
“You just haven’t met the right one yet.”
“We still love you anyway.”
Listen before you preach.
Get involved in LGBT advocacy.
Don’t reinforce stereotypes.
Don’t assume anything has changed because your friend came out, and don’t treat them differently.
Speak up against homophobia.
Refer to your straight boyfriend or girlfriend as “partner.”
Don’t assume that your LGBT friend has a crush on you.
