Tips for Straight Allies

  • Don’t out LGBT friends to other people without their permission.

  • Know your local resources.

  • Don’t let your negative personal beliefs come before your friendship.

  • Don’t say any of the following things:

    • “We always knew.”

    • “But what about the straight crushes and relationships you had in the past?”

    • “You just haven’t met the right one yet.”

    • “We still love you anyway.”

  • Listen before you preach.

  • Get involved in LGBT advocacy.

  • Don’t reinforce stereotypes.

  • Don’t assume anything has changed because your friend came out, and don’t treat them differently.

  • Speak up against homophobia.

  • Refer to your straight boyfriend or girlfriend as “partner.”

  • Don’t assume that your LGBT friend has a crush on you.
